Cable Edged Pocket Shawl

This pocket shawl pattern has a beautiful cable edge, the shawl is worked by creating the width and continuing your rows until you reach your desired length. The pattern is suitable for confident beginners through to experienced crocheters.

When worked at the provided gauge and row count your shawl will measure 23″ width and 60″ length. You are welcome to reduce or increase your width by removing stitches from the centre of the rows the only fixed stitches are the 8 at the start and end of the row, if you would like your shawl a different length you can continue working rows to your desired length always finish on a repeat of row 3 before working rows 106 & 107.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

Aran yarn – 640g/1280m
6mm hook

If you would like to work your cables in a different colour you will need approximately 1080m of main colour and 200m of cable colour.

STITCHES AND PATTERN INFO

This pattern is written using US terms

Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Fdc = foundation double crochet
Bptc = back post treble crochet
Fptc = front post treble crochet
Slst = slip stitch
St = stitch
Xdc = X dc’s in the next st
DcX = dc in next X stitches
skx = skip x stitches
()x = repeat instruction
[] additional information
[RS] = Right side
[WS] = Wrong side
{} = Cable Stitches

In all above instructions X counts as any number eg 2dc, dc10, sk5.

Ch2 is for height only to reduce gaps, if you’d prefer you can ch3 counting the ch3 as your First dc.
Fdc can be replaced with a chain and dc into chs. For main shawl ch72, for pockets ch38.

GAUGE

4” square = 11dc, 7 rows

MAIN SHAWL

• 1). [RS] Fdc70, turn
• 2). [WS] Ch2, Dc2, {Bptc6}, Dc54, {Bptc6}, Dc2, turn
• 3). [RS]Ch2, Dc2, {sk3, Fptc3, work back into skipped sts in front of the 3 just created, Fptc3, sk Fptc3}, Dc54, {sk3, Fptc3, work back into skipped sts in front of the 3 just created, Fptc3, sk Fptc3}, dc2, turn
• 4). [WS] Repeat row 2
• 5). [RS] Repeat row 3

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until you have completed 105 rows [or reached your desired length]

• 106). Dc70, turn
• 107). Ch1, 3Sc, Sc68, 3Sc, [continue working down the length of the shawl] Sc212 [2Sc in each dc], [continue working along width] 3Sc, Sc68, 3Sc, [continue working down the length] Sc212 [2Sc in each dc], Slst to 1st Sc, fasten off.

POCKETS – make 2

• 1). Fdc36, turn
• 2). Ch2, Dc2, {Bptc6}, Dc20, {Bptc6}, Dc2, turn
• 3). Ch2, Dc2, {sk3, Fptc3, work back into skipped sts in front of the 3 just created, Fptc3, sk Fptc3}, Dc20, {sk3, Fptc3, work back into skipped sts in front of the 3 just created, Fptc3, sk Fptc3}, Dc2, turn
• 4). Repeat row 2
• 5). Repeat row3

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until you have completed 13 rows

• 14). Ch2, Dc36. Fasten off

If you have adapted the size of the main shawl, adapt the pocket by the same amount. Feel free to adjust the pocket size and placement to your preference.
Position the pocket on your shawl and sew or crochet around the 3 sides to attach. I have positioned pockets 2 rows up from the edging and central on the width.
